Gloria's delusion

Editorial Malaya May 16, 2010 Gloria’s delusion ‘Conscience will have nothing to do with the inevitable shift in the loyalty of the erstwhile allies of Gloria.’ RARELY do we agree with Gloria Arroyo’s apple polishers, but this time we are with presidential spokesman Ricardo Saludo when he said Noynoy Aquino must be kidding when he said Gloria Arroyo, not Kris Arroyo, should go on self-exile. Noynoy was commenting on a promise of Kris during the campaign that she would leave the country if her presence became a liability to her brother’s presidency. Our reason, however, is nothing remotely related to Saludo’s claim that Arroyo cannot leave because she has a duty to fulfill her mandate as an incoming Pampanga congressman. Gloria should stay – nay, be prevented from leaving the country – so she could face the charges the incoming administration is readying against her. Noynoy ran on the platform of anti-corruption. That promise must be redeemed. Gloria and her family must not be allow...

Noynoy's Problem

EDITORIAL The Daily Tribune February 6, 2010 From the day Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino was pushed by a faction of the Liberal Party, along with the Aquino-Cojuangco family members, to become their standard bearer, they all banked on the Cory euphoria brought about by the death of Cory Aquino who was being portrayed by the yellow media as a saint, to get Noynoy the presidency and the Cory crowd, regained power and influence. It was this euphoria that they believed would carry Noynoy through, on which his campaign was grounded. Thus it was that Aquino and his LPs copied, to the letter, the Cory campaign of 1985 — the fight between “good and evil” along with the vow of going after the Marcoses and bringing back the stolen wealth. There was too the same line of the LPs which was copied from the 1986 Cory campaign: Experience vs inexperienced, with claims that Cory had no experience in stealing and cheating. Early enough, it was pointed out by crtics that no euphoria can ever last long, and...

Why is Noynoy Aquino losing support?

By Tony Lopez Tuesday, 12 January 2010 The Manila Times As I have written in a previous column (December 17, 2009), the May 10 presidential election is going to be tighter than most people think. A Social Weather Stations survey of December 27 to 28, 2009 found support for Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd for president has diminished, from 46 percent to 44 percent three weeks after a previous survey (December 5 to 10, 2009) also by SWS. On the other hand, support for Sen. Manny Villar has increased dramatically, by 6 percentage points, from 27 percent to 33 percent. Assuming a high turnout of 45 million voters, 6 percent translates into 2.7 million votes—a big gain in just 20 days. That implies Villar is gaining 135,000 votes nationwide every day. That is not “soft” support, contrary to what former Sen. Frank Drilon insists. If Villar gains 100,000 votes every day for the next 120 days, he adds 12 million votes to his base by May 10. At the start of January 2010, the former Senate pre...

Mar gives way to Noynoy as LP presidential bet

By Dennis Carcamo Philippine Star MANILA, Philippines -- Liberal Party president Sen. Mar Roxas announced today (Sept. 1) he is giving way to Sen. Noynoy Aquino III to be their party’s standard bearer in the 2010 presidential elections. "I'm now announcing that I'm supporting the candidacy of Noynoy Aquino," Roxas said in a hastily called press conference at the jampacked Gabaldon Room in Club Filipino, Greenhills, San Juan City. He said the decision was initially difficult for him, but he chose to make the sacrifice for the sake of unity. "Country first before self… I choose to lead unity not division," Roxas said. Also at the event were Reps. Ruffy Biazon, Erin Tañada, Riza Hontiveros-Baraquel, and Nereo Acosta, Ang Ladlad Party List Chairman Danton Remoto, and former cabinet officials Dinky Soliman (DSWD), Chito Gascon (DepEd), Juan Miguel Luz (DepEd), Liwayway Vinzons-Chato (BIR) and Avelino Cruz (DND).

Country Above Self

By Senator Mar Roxas Club Filipino, 1st of September 2009 Country above self. Bayan bago ang sarili.Iyan ang habilin ng aking lolo, President Manuel Roxas. Our nation is in trouble. Leadership is bankrupt. Institutions are in disarray. People are hungry. Noynoy Aquino and I share the same outrage over the mess we are all in, the same way we share solution – clean, honest, selfless public service. Marami at matindi and nga problem ng bansa. Kailangan nating ayusin. Matindi ang kalaban. We need a determined force for good far stroinger than the festering evil around us. We need to fight just as our own fathers fought dictatorship, and just as both died believing that good will conquer evil. Noynoy and I want to make a difference, but we also know that we need to unite to achieve what we want. I am the President of the Liberal Party. It is within my power to preside over a potentially divisive process or to make the party a bridge for the forces of change. I choose to lead unity, not divi...
